The use of video in the recruitment process has been talked about for several years but technology was the main inhibitor – not any more!

Advances in technology have increased the accessibility of video on the internet. News channels like the BBC and SKY, plus user generated video sharing led by YouTube have shown a growing desire by the masses to not only consume video content over the web but also to create and contribute to it.

 

Against this background of visualisation there are a number of video use products coming into the talent management market.

 

At the base level, some products simply convert a written CV to a “talking head” whereby the jobseeker virtually recites (in front of a video camera) the information typically included in their CV. It is likely to be scripted and as such eliminates the flavour of the person’s character.

 

The next level up in this new selection tools category allows jobseekers (we’ll refer to them as the consumer market) to create a multi-media profile of themselves for viewing by an employer/recruiter. They allow for some degree of creativity and the uploading of a canned video created elsewhere.

The flip side to the consumer market are those tools geared towards improving the employer/recruiter screening methodology – tools that save time and travel costs in the interview process and in addition provide a lot of the due diligence needed to do a  thorough screening.

 

So here we have it. On the one hand, jobseekers are creating clever profiles of themselves using the multi-media tools that have advanced to “easy to use” status. And on the other, recruiters and employers are beginning to think about the best way to accept these profiles: how to treat them as applications, how to store them, how to restrict viewing access, how to incorporate them into their existing applicant tracking systems.
